I'm thinking about maybe teams of 4, round robin style elimination. If you have any input on this, or ideas on what kind of rules/setting you think would work well for it (Hard to say for sure what's available until the game comes out, but it's usually the same stuff) discuss it here.

Security Alert - Adobe Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat

To All Glory of War Sponsors, Members and Visitors:

We don't generally use the news page to broadcast virus/security alerts - usually there's no reason to cause a panic over issues that most people should be responsible for themselves.

However, given the ubiquitous nature of Flash, and the fact that Adobe has come out right away and listed this as a critical issue, we felt it prudent to pass the word.

As it stands, Anyone using current release versions of Flash Player, Reader or Acrobat are vulnerable to having their system hijacked by outside intruders.

Risk will vary per individual setups and habits, but there are early reports of attackers making use of this exploit. It affects browsers and programs for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms, so don't think just because you don't use IE you are safe.

Full details about the flaw, including steps to protect against intrusion are posted here on Adobe's website:

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa10-01.html

The 10.1 beta flash player is not vulnerable and is available for download here:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/

Not sure on your player version? Check here:

Follow the instructions posted above, and you should be fine. Good luck, and happy surfing.

BATTLEFIELD BC2:BOTR

Well I figured since I now have a load of time on my hands I would take on the task of forming a Battle of the Regulars. BOTR for short. BOTR's are the way to simply show your skills off to your fellow gamers by pitting us against each other in battle. I will be splitting in old time fashion. TEAM A and TEAM B. Teams will be chosen by the old time method of "Enny Meeny Miny Moe". Teams will be given their own space in the forums and will take on the daunting task of forming squads, choosing captains, strategies and other stuff. You will also be expected to taunt the opposing team. Just remember stick to rules of the community. IE no racial slurs or nudity. On May 3rd the thread for voting on the date and time will open up. Until then its locked and hidden from the community.
Date: May 29th
Time: 7pm eastern time

WoW Guild Celebrates 5th Anniversary!

Congratulations to Brecky on winning a copy of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, courtesy of Glory of War!

Thanks again to everyone who attended; it was great fun. Even that super slo-mo, "let's all look like we're the 6 million dollar man" run through the suppression rooms. See you in Azeroth!

Original announcement follows below, along with a couple of screens from tonight's 'hard won' kills.

Quote

For those who have been living in a cave, or on Mars, or in a permanent state of WoW-denial, behold! Glory of War's very own guild has been in existence a full five years, making it one of the longest surviving guilds in the game today.

It's been a long, long time since those early days, and many a monster has been crushed underfoot. We've been through both the dizzying highs and terrible lows so common to MMO gaming, and crawled through the other side relatively intact.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, the one and only Luminathor (that's me ) is taking his rogue's vanishing act on the road, and leading a very special raid on Blackrock Mountain. We'll be taking our most over-geared characters on a fun run through the game's earliest raid-level dungeons: Molten Core and Blackwing Lair. It promises to be a quick and hilarious look back at what used to make early WoWers quake with fear, and pound their keyboards in anger.

Everything starts off promptly at 9pm server time, Friday, March 5th.

Anyone with an active account and a high-level character on Lightning's Blade is welcome to attend. And for all current members of the guild, pay attention! There is a special surprise in store for those who make the trek this Friday...

So raise a glass to all those fine heroes, past and present, who have set forth under the Glory of War banner. To the first five years...and many more!
That's right! Glory of War is pleased to be hosting another giveaway. This time, we'll be giving away a pre-ordered copy of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the PC to whomever can guess how long it'll take for the grenade in the banner to explode after pulling the pin (basically, a guess-the-number game).

Here's the rules:

1- Guess how long after you pull the pin before the grenade explodes (between 1 and 40 seconds). In other words, guess a number between 1 and 40 without going over.
2- Person with the closest number without going over wins (Price is Right rules).
3- Contest will close on Monday, 25 January.
4- One guess per person.
5- Correct number will be chosen on Monday, 25 January by a random number generator.
Also, once you connect you will need to subscribe to all channels to be able to see who's online in channels other than the one you're in. To do this, right click "Glory of War" at the very top of the channel tree and select "Subscribe to All Channels".
(Secret contest inside! Read on!)

The owners of GofW would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. In order to help make things a bit more merry, we'd like to host a little contest, with a present to be given away at the end. Since we're hoping for a strong presence in the upcoming Star Trek Online, the prize for this contest will be one regular copy of the game, pre-ordered from Gamestop (so you'll have early access to the open beta, plus the freebies given out with the preordered regular version of the game).

Since the prize is STO-related, the contest is STO-related too.

---------------------

Short Version: This is an art/drawing contest. Use MSPaint to draw a scene of GofW owners doing Trek-like things, and email it to the address below. You have one week, and then the community will vote on the best entry.
1) The theme of the piece should be, "Glory goes Trekkin'" - either a) a scene utilizing owners as captains, be it in space or on a planet (or starbase) engaged in 'Trek-like' activities, or B ) a depiction of what they think a 'Gowarian' (our fictional race) might look like.

2) Each submission should incorporate Glory of War or www.gloryofwar.com in it.

3) MS-Paint only.

4) Standard 'offensiveness' rules apply. Nothing racist, sexist, homophobic or pornographic.

8) Gloryofwar.com owners and their immediate families are not eligible to win.

---------------------
The lovely and talented Peli helped me test it tonight, it seems to be working perfectly! Which of course makes me very suspicious, but we'll give it another good run-through tomorrow night. I got the high-speed map downloads working, and I can also post a zip of the maps if you hate waiting.

Server downtime

We're really sorry that all our services have been down much of the past day. What started out yesterday as a routine Windows update (which usually goes off without a hitch) turned into a nightmare of our hosting company discovering broken motherboards, misconfiguring our server's NICs, and general customer service horror.

Needless to say, we're going to have a long discussion about the problems and how to avoid them in the future. We'll do everything that we can to avoid something like this again.

TeamSpeak 3 is coming!

That's right! Despite the fact that we thought TS3 was being bundled with Duke Nukem Forever, it appears that, in fact, the TS3 beta will be released on December 19, and we'll do our best to be the first ones in line to get it.

As most know, we've been using the venerable Teamspeak 2 server and client for as long as GofW has been around, and many of us used it even before that. Given that it's probably nearing 10 years old, it's a little too venerable for our tastes anymore. Still, changing to something else hasn't really been an option until now.

So, we wanted to make everyone aware that we're eagerly anticipating this release, and look forward to firing up a TS3 server as soon as we can, with the intention of eventually migrating from our current TS2 server to TS3.

What does that mean for you?

I'm glad you asked. First, it means that we'll all be able to hear each other a lot better, and hopefully will have a lot more flexibility in our voice chat capabilities. Practically speaking, it also means that you're going to have to download a new chat client at some point. Fortunately, the user database seems to be in the same format, so with a little luck, nobody who uses Teamspeak will have to create a new account. However, we will be pruning the user database to get rid of inactive people, so if you haven't signed into our server in a few months, please do so at least once before December 19.

We're pretty excited to see what new things we can do with TS3, and hope that when we put the server up, you'll all help us test it. We'd like to switch over as quickly as possible, but we'll probably leave the old TS2 server up alongside the new TS3 server to make the transition smoother.

We'll make an announcement when we've got everything set up, and will let you know where to get the client and how to connect.

If you're interested in what TS3 has to offer, here's some information, with more available at http://www.teamspeak.com.

Quote

TeamSpeak 3 continues the legacy of the original TeamSpeak communication system previously offered in TeamSpeak Classic (1.5) and TeamSpeak 2. TeamSpeak 3 is not merely an extension of its predecessors but rather a complete rewrite in C++ of its proprietary protocol and core technology.

With over seven years of experience and leadership in the VoIP sector, our engineers have created a flexible, powerful, and scalable solution granting you the ability to customize and tailor your voice communication needs any way you desire. New users and TeamSpeak veterans alike will now enjoy a completely new experience in voice communication using TeamSpeak 3's unmatched functionality and powerful new features.

For additional information please also visit:

YouTube Podcast

Facebook Community

Literature (PDFs)

Our next generation TeamSpeak 3 software has been highly improved compared to its predecessors. For starters, both the Client and Server are now available as a flexible cross-platform solution for Windows (32bit and 64bit), Mac OS X (Intel and PPC) and Linux (32bit and 64bit). All platforms are 100% feature compatible and feature rich so regardless of which platform you use, all new features will be available across all platforms upon TeamSpeak 3's launch date.

Our engineers have re-written the code from the ground up using C++ to improve TeamSpeak's performance and compatibility. This allows TeamSpeak 3's native binaries to be built from the same codebase for various target operating systems.

TeamSpeak 3 also includes a robust cross-platform Software Development Kit (SDK) which enables full-featured voice integration within existing products or services including online games, virtual worlds, educational programs, military simulators, or any application where up to thousands of users require crystal clear, simultaneous voice communication.

Improved Voice Quality and Latency

TeamSpeak 3's voice quality is truly revolutionary. Featuring completely new codecs, automatic microphone adjustment, advanced noise reduction and echo cancelation, TeamSpeak 3 offers only the highest quality in voice communication. Users can finally say goodbye to echo, feedback, and background buzzing noises as the evolution of quality voice communication has arrived. In addition, we've significantly lowered the latency (the amount of time it takes for your voice to be "heard" on the other side) compared with TeamSpeak 2 and other voice communication software solutions.

Raising the Bar

TeamSpeak 3 was designed with cutting edge hardware in mind. Thus, it will have full support for the latest G-keys from Logitech® in addition to other currently unannounced hardware manufacturers.

It's also possible to connect to multiple servers at once using "tabs" similar to what is found in most web browsers so now you can administer or participate in multiple TeamSpeak 3 Servers at the same time. In addition, support for multiple audio devices and outputs over simultaneously connected servers is also available. Preferred servers are now stored as bookmarks, similar to your favorite web browser.

Stunning 3D Sound Effects

TeamSpeak 3 now features fully integrated 3D sound support which allows spatial placement of sound effects and audio streams. This creates the illusion of a sound source being placed anywhere in three dimensional space, including behind, to the left of, to the right of, above, or below the listener. The possibilities and applications of 3D sound are virtually endless with TeamSpeak 3. Other TeamSpeak users can be virtually placed around your own audible position. Place conference hosts in front of the attendees or team mates around your own player position. No special hardware is needed. Simply use your headset or 5.1/7.1 speakers to enjoy spatial sound.

Powerful Permissions System

The TeamSpeak 3 Server features a completely overhauled, hierachrical permissions system with the ability to dynamically create, define, and apply group permissions as you see fit. This provides server administrators superior control and effective tools for managing and building social networks.

Improved Security and Privacy

TeamSpeak 3 introduces a new authentication system. Instead of using a combination of username and password, the TeamSpeak 3 Client creates unique identities which are stored and tracked by every TeamSpeak 3 Server you're connecting to. For administrators, this eliminates the need to manually register a username and password with the server and allows administrators to assign a set of permissions to your identity which can be automatically recalled by the server every time you connect. The end result is strengthened security and improved administration with eliminated username and password issues, effectively making the process of administering users far less tedious than ever before.

Friends and Foes

Track your friends (and foes) through TeamSpeak 3's all new Friends/Foes list. When a friend or foe is added, the TeamSpeak 3 Client remembers your friend or foe's unique identity regardless of whether they change their display/nickname, and regardless of what server you're connected to. TeamSpeak 3 allows you to assign a custom nickname to your friends and can play a custom sound event when your friends come online. TeamSpeak 3 also tracks your friends/foes "last seen" date and allows you to permanently mute/ignore your foes.

Firewall Friendly File Transfer

Maximize your online collaborative experience with TeamSpeak 3's all new file transfer features. Depending on your permissions, users can recursively upload or download files on a per-channel basis or into a common folder tree. All files are stored directly on the TeamSpeak 3 Server. Users no longer need to worry about how to setup FTP or mess with complicated firewall issues or other file sharing solutions. TeamSpeak 3 makes file sharing a breeze.

Improved Licensing System

The TeamSpeak 3 Server introduces a completely new licensing system containing simplified, automatic, and effective tracking of all of your licensed servers. The former, tedious "registration by IP" process has been replaced with an encrypted key which allows your TeamSpeak 3 Server environment to be tracked and licensed automatically. As an added option, the TeamSpeak 3 Client can also indicate to users who the host provider is and provide a link back to your website.

Got creative talent? TeamSpeak 3 allows you to create, customize, and automate almost all aspects of the client and server.

Fully Customizable User Interface

The TeamSpeak 3 Client's GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been completely redesigned, providing a professional new look and intuitive navigation. The interface itself can be fully customized or "skinned" using stylesheets, allowing users to further alter the look and feel of the Client. Advanced users can even write modifications or addons to suit their needs.

Custom Sound Packs

Sound packs allow users to customize just about any events or sounds within the TeamSpeak 3 client. Don't like the default "Connected" voice? No problem. With TeamSpeak 3 you can create entire sound packs...and even better, share your creative talents with your friends.

Unprecedented Extensibility via Plugins

TeamSpeak 3's all new plugin system allows developers to add functionality to their software or hardware. For example, upon release the TeamSpeak 3 Client will include a plugin for the for the Logitech® G15 keyboard LCD, which allows you to see in realtime who is speaking, what channel you're in, how many users are logged into your server, and more. TeamSpeak 3's plugin system features the powerful Lua scripting language which is also supported by many popular gaming titles.

Improved Scripting and Automation

The all new TeamSpeak 3 Server represents years of engineering experience in creating scalable VoIP solutions. The server introduces the ServerQuery system (formerly TCP Query) which allows powerful scripting and automation tools to be built based on the exact same instruction set and functionality provided by the TeamSpeak 3 Client. In addition, the server can now support hundreds of virtual server instances per master binary. This is particularly cost effective for large scale hosting.

TeamSpeak 3... prepare to rethink the possibilities.
